Thanda - The Image Industry

It is always a pleasure to work with a dedicated set of students whenever I'm on a workshop. To work with a group of students who all have some ties to the imaging world is a privilege. So it was last week with the African Impact Photography Workshop last week in Thanda Private Game Reserve.

At the beginning of the week everyone was very modest about their skills in photography, with most explaining that they were beginners. Ultimately it cam out that although the majority of the students were technical beginners, they were nowhere near beginners of understanding imagery itself. Let me elaborate. In a group of 8 students each and every single one had some experience in the imaging world. We had a Broadcast director's assistant, A film production assistant, a photography student who had just completed a 2 year course, two art students, a travel writer and photographer, an army photographer and an advertising director (my apologies to all if I have the job descriptions slightly wrong). This is the first time I've had a group in Thanda, or St Lucia for that matter, that have had this much combined experience in the image industry.

I reiterate again the strength of workshops. Admittedly it can be a hit and miss affair as to who is going to end up on the group. Usually there's an interesting mix with the common thread of a love for photography and a desire to learn more. Occasionally the students involved hit gold in their companions and can learn more from each other than a year with an instructor could provide.

So as I say, what a pleasure to work with such a talented group!

  1. Well put Emil! I think we all couldn't believe our luck! What are the odds eh? 8 girls from 6 different nationalities and all studying or working in the creative industry in some way or other. I just want to thank you again for your tireless passion and enthusiasm during our photography workshop. I for one got a lot out of it and I think my photography has improved! Cheers, Zoe
